Quest Software and Cloudera announced plans to develop an Oracle connector for Apache Hadoop. This connector will link the Hadoop data management platform to Oracle databases. The bidirectional data transfer between Hadoop, which serves as a large-scale storage and computation engine, to relational data in Oracle databases is expected to be done by a free Quest utility currently code-named "Ora-Oop".

Oracle posted solid fourth-quarter fiscal results with an increase in net profits and revenue by 25 percent and 39 percent, respectively, when compared to the same period last year. The rise in profits was attributed to higher revenue from databases and business software as well as hardware sales from the acquisition of Sun Microsystems. Revenues went up from $6.9 billion a year ago to $9.5 billion.

A recent BestPerf blog reports that the Oracle Sun SPARC Enterprise T5440 (five in number) and a single Oracle Sun SPARC Enterprise M9000 server delivered a world record result of 28,648.74 SPECjAppServer2004 JOPS@Standard on the SPECjAppServer2004 benchmark. According to Kevin Kelly, the result was run using the Oracle WebLogic 10.3.3 Application Server, a component of Oracle Fusion Middleware, and Oracle Database 11g Enterprise Edition with Oracle Solaris 10 to obtain this world record result.

As Oracle announces its new Oracle Business Process Management (BPM) Suite 11g, the company also states that it is committed to the investments of Sun customers in business process management technology. Specifically, the BPM technology within the Java Composite Application Platform Suite (Java CAPS or JCAPS) is promised to be protected, and migrations will not be forced as Oracle moves toward transitioning to a converged product line over time.

Sun Ray users have a new patch for Sun Ray Server Software (SRSS) 4.2 and new firmware for the Sun Ray product line's newest addition, the Sun Ray 3 Plus Client. The firmware is included in the patch, Sun Ray Core Services Patch-02, which means users can now deploy the Sun Ray 3 Plus clients via virtual private network (VPN). Oracle recently introduced the Sun Ray 3 Plus Client along with the latest release of Oracle Virtual Desktop Infrastructure software. These products add to Oracle's desktop virtualization portfolio, which also includes Oracle Secure Global Desktop and Oracle VM VirtualBox.

Within a five-day span, two VirtualBox maintenance releases were issued. The first was version 3.2.2, which was made available on June 2. It offered 38 fixes to improve VirtualBox's stability and correct regressions. Then on June 7, VirtualBox 3.2.4 was released to fix a couple of regressions found in version 3.2.2. Nine items were fixed in this latest addition. VirtualBox is a general-purpose full virtualizer for x86 hardware targeted at server, desktop and embedded use. This virtualization solution is open source and available as a free download.
